CONCERNING THE TIME OF YEAR AND DATE FOR FUTURE NFBF
CONVENTIONS
WHEREAS
the National Federation of the Blind of Florida traditionally holds
its annual
convention over the Memorial Day weekend; and
WHEREAS
the State of Florida was hit by four devastating hurricanes in the
latter half of
2004 and this trend is predicted to continue according to the National
Weather
Service with regard to future hurricane seasons; and
WHEREAS
if the State Convention is scheduled in the Fall months when future
hurricanes
are likely to strike Florida in the months of September, October and/or
November, resulting in not only significant financial losses to the
affiliate but the
likely cancellation of the 2006 convention; and
WHEREAS
serious repercussions would occur even if a hurricane strikes a few
weeks prior
to the State Convention, making it unlikely that many members could
leave their
damaged homes or secure transportation to the event; and
WHEREAS
the NFBF would have to reschedule its 2006 convention months later
because of
contractual agreements with hotels and a myriad of plans would have
to be
cancelled and redone for a much later future date; and
WHEREAS
there are virtually no such weather hazards in late May, over the Memorial
Day
Weekend and members would not have to miss work or school if future
annual
conventions continue to be held during this time frame;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED
by the National Federation of the Blind in convention assembled this
30th day
of May, 2005, THAT The NFBF continue to hold its 2006 convention
and
subsequent conventions in late May over the Memorial Day Weekend or
in the
late spring with the time to be determined by the NFBF Board of Directors.
